Wendell Rodricks is one of Goa’s famous son who has made it big in the fashion industry, but tailoring profession does not seem to attract the Goan youth. Those who could not make it big in the fashion industry back home in India took another route to stardom and riches in a foreign country. Philip, hailing from the coastal village of Benaulim in South Goa, is one of them who have been able to fulfill his dreams. Philip runs his own designing and tailoring shop Designers in Doha, the capital city of Qatar. His clients include not only the Goans and Indians from other parts of the country, but Arabs mainly the Egyptians. Section of Philip’s staff includes the Goans and nationals from different parts of the world.
There is one more tailoring shop which has a Goan name, Goan Art Tailors, which is also a social melting point for many Goans. Here, Goans get a chance to the meet fellow villagers and exchange news and gossips back home in Goa. The shop started many decades back when mobile phones were unheard off and thus Goans who had been on holiday told Goa-related stories to fellow Goans based in Qatar.
In recent times the importance of Goan Art Tailors as a meeting point has decreased with the advent of the modern communication systems.
Still, the two tailoring shops render yeomen service to the clubs in Qatar. The two business houses promote the social, cultural, sporting and religious activities of the Goan community in Qatar in various ways, not necessarily through donations.
But, the two business ventures are facing challenges in the ever-changing Goan society; they are having a hard time to find quality tailors in Goa as Goan youth are shunning the profession and trying to make a dent into other more fields.
