Dream Emerald Cooperative Housing Society Navelim nets a perfect score in garbage management
Margao,
October 2: “I believe the only way to segregated garbage is by the
creator himself (source), if he or she is disciplined everything falls in
place,” says Stanley D’Costa of Dream Emerald Cooperative Housing Society,
Navelim.
Stanley
is one of the several residents who stay in Dream Emerald Cooperative Housing
Society Navelim, a multi-dwelling housing complex which has some 100 units,
coming under Navelim village panchayat. Navelim, like all Goan villages which
fall on the periphery of the cities, is trying to come with solutions for the
moulds of garbage which find its way into dustbins installed in the village.
Most
of the garbage is from the multi-dwelling complexes which have come in the
villages. Villagers in the interior parts of Navelim either burn the garbage
and composite, although the number who opt for the latter option are few in
number.
Thus
Dream Emerald Cooperative Housing society is a shining example in Navelim.
“None
of the garbage goes out of the complex. Plastic, tins and cardboard are sorted
and sold later. Wet garbage is in vermin compost and then the compost is sold.
The leftover food for the complex finds its way to the piggery. The society
pays only the lady Rs.5000 for full days work. No garbage is disposed on
Sundays,” says Stanley.
“Society
garbage is not a burden to government or panchayat bodies and panchayat is very
happy.
Stanley
has a few suggestions for the general public: “Plastic, cans and bottles can be collected and sold, all members
to segregate and dispose garbage at the receiving point.
“Wet garbage to keep a
plastic bin and ask any locals if they want feed for their piggery until vermin
compost is functional.”
Talking about Dream
Emerald Stanley says: “Every unit has 2 buckets one black (dry waste) and
one green (wet waste) but some people still mix garbage.
Stanley wants to do
something about it on a small scale in Carxetta, Velim
“I want to do
something in Carxetta as well, I see lot of people throwing
plastic in the bushes. I have in mind to build two large cages, one for bottle and one
for plastic- off course I will pay for it , but need a place to install it and
then every month call the guys from the scarp yard near Costa car wash
Sucaldem, Chinchinim and sell it. I have not found any one to support me one
this in the ward,” adds Stanley, who works for an offshore oil drilling
company.
Stanley's jobs has
taken him to different continents and countries each of which has been an
experience and the last few years he has been trying to get a better
understanding on how these countries successfully manage their domestic waste.
The answer is simple he says at source, it that is taken care of, everything
falls in place.
No need to take fancy
trips to German and other European countries to study garbage, the solution
lies in each ones kitchen and how each one of us religious follow the guiding
principles of garbage management.
