the Aged at Nagao Verna to be renovated

Salcete Goa India : The Home for the Aged belonging to the Sisters of St
Joseph of Cluny at Nagao Verna is all set to get a new look, thanks to the
renovation plans.
The home
for the elderly, which has been functioning since 1962, was long due for up
gradation.
The Sisters
of St Joseph of Cluny are now planning to increase the intake capacity of the
inmates from the existing 25 to 66.
“At
present we have 25 inmates and we want to extend our service to our needy
senior brothers and sisters. We plan to build single, double and dormitory
accommodation for 66 inmates,” said Sister Nanette Temudo, Sister Superior,
Home for the Aged, Nagao Verna.
“The
present facilities available here are inadequate to serve better. In order to
provide more comfortable stay with peace and joy there is an urgent need to
demolish and reconstruct the Old Aged Home,” she disclosed.
The land
where the Home for the Aged is based is registered in the name of the Society of
St. Joseph of Cluny at Nagao Verna Goa.
Sister
Temudo disclosed that the total project cost of the entire project is Rs. Five
crores.
So far
Rs.two crores have been invested in the project and the Sisters of St Joseph of
Chuny are looking to tide over the remaining balance amount by way of
donations.
“The project
expected to complete by 2013 and the funds required are Rs.Three crores. We
appeal to all the brothers and sisters of the society to come forward to make
the dream come true by your personal donations. The amount donated is fully tax
exempted,” said Sister Temudo.
Besides
the Home for the Aged at Nagao Verna, the Sisters of St Joseph of Cluny also
manage the Dr. Roque Ferreira`s
Memorial Hospital from 1963 in Verna and a children’s Home in Senaulim.
The
congregation also operates the Cluny Convent in Vaddem, Vasco. Catering,
Bakery, Confectionery, Food & Beverage, Tailoring, Embroidery, Craft,
Typewriting, Shorthand, Computer Science and Beauty culture courses are taught
at the convent. These courses help them either to be employed or self-employed.
The
Vaddem convent besides providing been a Technical Institute also serves as a Nursery
School and as a hostel for working girls.
The Sisters of St. Joseph
of Cluny arrived in India in the year 1827, and established their first house
in Puducherry under the administration of Bishop Hébert. They went on to make
their presence felt in various territories. Some of the places where the
sisters have established are New Delhi, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal,
Karnataka, Goa, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Sikkim and Madhya Pradesh.
Sisters of St. Joseph of
Cluny number around 3000, and belong to some 70 different nationalities and are
serving in more than 50 countries.
