Hockey Camp held at Cuncolim

Hockey Camp held at Cuncolim, South Goa, India

Cuncolim: A small beginning to groom hockey talent has been kick started in Cuncolim, thanks in a large measure to a group of individuals who have come forward to form Hockey Cuncolim.
The new club, which has promotion of hockey talent high on its talent, launched its first venture to spot and groom hockey talent from the municipal juridisication by hosting their first hockey camp for boys and girls.
“It was a first for Cuncolim. Despite the lack of a regular hockey playground students from Maria Bambina Convent High School (girls convent) and Our lady of Health High School participated in the training held at the Maddicotto grounds,” said Glestone Fernandes, Chief Coordinator of the camp.

“Forty hockey aspirants, 20 from each from the above mentioned two schools took part in the training which commenced on April 21 at the Maddicotto grounds and culminated on May 2 with matches played against schools from Navelim and Chandor at the Fatorda ground,” Glestone added.

The girl’s team played excellent by keeping their much superior opponents at bay, both matches ended in a goalless draw.
The boys had their first feel of a regular hockey ground, though they lost both their matches they excelled in what they learnt.
Around 70 students from Salcette were present at the Fatorda grounds who were motivated by the presence of members of

Goans Hockey Association led by Farell Furtado Gracias  and Beny Viegas.

The matches at Fatorda were a great experience for the new hockey players from Cuncolim says Glestone.

“This was a great day for Hockey Cuncolim, most students had never set foot on a hockey ground before, and playing on this ground was for them, a great achievement.

“The boys have great talent and I’m hoping their school backs them up with all the motivation they require to continue playing hockey. I have assured the school Physical Education teachers all the support to train the boys and girls, the Goans Hockey Association has assured support by providing hockey sticks and kits, and if necessary a registered coach,” says the Cuncolim official.

“But we really need is a regular playground as the one we are using at Maddicotto Cuncolim is full of stones and the ball flies in the air and changes direction on account of the uneven surfaces and pebbles,” he added.
